Lady Pirates wrap up postseason spot

April 17, 2013

For the first time since 2010 the Granbury Lady Pirates are preparing for the softball playoffs.

But there’s still a critical regular-season game to be played Friday at home against Fort Worth Western Hills.

The Lady Pirates (14-13, 10-2 in 7-4A) secured their place in the postseason with a 20-5 thumping of South Hills in Fort Worth Friday. They can finish no worse than third in district, but still have hopes of claiming the runner-up spot behind Aledo (12-0).

The Lady Pirates were playing at Aledo last night. A win in that game, combined with a win Friday over Western Hills would give Granbury second place outright. A loss, combined with a win Friday would leave Granbury and Western Hills tied, providing the Lady Cougars avoided being upset by Trimble Tech last night.

Should the Lady Pirates and Lady Cougars finish tied, they would face each other in a one-game playoff to determine the second and third seeds for the playoffs. Western Hills won their first-round meeting 4-1 in Fort Worth.

“I’m excited. The kids are excited. It’s a great feeling to know we’re going to the playoffs,” said Lady Pirate coach Chad Kimberling.

“From this point on, no matter who we’re playing, it’s the most important game of the year. We have to get into that mindset.”

The Lady Pirates faced 2A powerhouse Brock (27-5) Saturday and lost 6-2 at home. However, the Lady Eagles only held a 2-1 lead through four innings.
