Joey Jenkins of Tolar thinks he may have uncovered several “gems.”

Four young women from Tolar have qualified to represent Texas at the 4-H National Horse Judging Contest in Oklahoma City.

The girls, members of the Hood County 4-H Horse Judging Team, have been competing for several years with limited success, said Jenkins, father of two of the competitors – Nelle Jenkins, 16, and Mattie Jenkins, 14. Maddison Smith, 17, and Ruth Fauber, 15, are the other team members.

“A few bright spots here and there – however, the first real sparkle came in 2013 at the Fort Worth Stock Show where they won third place,” Jenkins said.

The team placed second a few weeks later in San Antonio.

Then the team posted a runner-up finish at state, qualifying the girls for the national contest in Oklahoma City Aug. 5.

The future looks just as bright.

The junior horse judging team gathers regularly to practice. They traveled to several competitions in an old van, often leaving at 6:30 in the morning to minimize hotel costs.
