The Granbury Marine Corps JROTC competed in the 8th Annual William J. Bordelon Air Rifle Tournament and the Civilian Marksmanship Program State Championship Tournament at Central Catholic High School in San Antonio last weekend. The first match consisted of air rifle position shooting 20 shots in the prone position, 20 shots in the standing position and 20 shots in the knelling position.

Hunter Dowell led the team with a total score of 551 out of 600 and placed 20th out of the field of 54 shooters, and the team – which also included Rebecca Anderson, Stephen Schofield and Tyler Morrissette – finished with a solid score of 2134 that positioned them in sixth place. Competing individually was Jacob Fleshman in the sporter category.

On the second day, the cadets shot in an International Standing Match that consisted of 40 shots in the standing position.  Dowell again lead the team with a score of 359 out of 400 placing 10th, while the team placed second overall.

Over 135 high school students participated in the largest competition held in South Texas. The match was the first competition for the Granbury team in the precision category.

“I was pleased with the team’s scores,” said coach Lt Col. Scott Casey, the Senior Marine Instructor.

“The team worked hard this weekend, and we are showing ourselves that we have the skills to post good numbers when it counts.”

The cadets will next compete at the Horned Frog Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 10 at Texas Christian University.
