February 13, 2013

Granbury High School students competed at the Region VIII Academic Decathlon Jan. 25-26 at Arlington Lamar High School.

Individual winners were:

Honors Division: Corissa Decker and Cy Sonderer, third in essay.

Scholastic Division: Bryton Chain, third in speech.

Varsity Division: Judith Orellana and Samuel Pixley, second in literature and art.

Sponsor Kerek Hogg, a GHS history teacher, congratulated the team for an outstanding job representing the school and placing fifth overall.

The Academic Decathlon is designed to include students from all academic backgrounds.

Each team consists of students divided into three categories.

This year’s topic was Russia. In addition to a seven-minute interview, a one-hour essay and two speeches (four minutes prepared and two minutes impromptu), written comprehensive exams are given in music, art, language/literature, mathematics, economics, social studies and the Super Quiz – the final event in which all contestants assemble in a gymnasium setting as one student from each school reports to the floor to be tested.
