Children’s Opera Theatre will be returning to Mambrino School in January 2014 after the school received a grant for the fifth straight year.
The program will be “The Ugly Duckling.” Geared toward children, the opera is based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen with music composed by Andrew Duncan.
The story promotes reading, working together and accepting differences in other people.
“This will be our fifth year in a row, and we’re very excited about it,” commented music teacher Bonnie Oates, who wrote the grant application. “The students have almost gotten in a habit of expecting it every year.”
Oates has already scheduled the Fort Worth group for Jan. 31.
The 45-minute performances will be followed by question and answer sessions, which give students an opportunity to ask questions about opera, singing, costumes, sets, props and other interesting topics.
Children’s Opera Theatre is a subsidiary program of Fort Worth Opera to educate school-aged children about music and opera. Each year, the program produces two different children’s operas and performs them in schools across the state.
