Princess Leia and Han Solo were in the house to help Brawner Intermediate School students “use the force” to celebrate reading during a “Story Wars” family night recently.
The “Star Wars”-themed evening activities included Light Saber Reading, Princess Leia Lingo Bingo, Yeti-made Bookmarks, and Ewok Bookwalk along with refreshments like Yoda Soda and Wookiee Cookies.
In addition, iPads are assisting all students develop reading skills and fluency. The customizable format (including font and lighting adjustments) and kinesthetic movement make them an ideal learning tool, according to intervention specialist Lorna Cockerham.
The iPads also have a triple-click voiceover function that allows the students to easily switch on options such as text-to-speech.
The technology assistance was partially funded through grants from the Granbury ISD Education Foundation.
