Hood County Library set for genealogical workshop on Friday

The public is invited to a free genealogical workshop, scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Hood County Library, 222 North Travis Street, in Granbury. Yvonne Ables of the Hood County Genealogical Society is slated to speak, and will also answer questions and show examples of how U.S. census records can be used in such research.
Voting helps United Way

It's time to cast your vote for the Granbury Oscars. Local residents are competing for the “Oscar” award as part of a fundraiser for the United Way of Hood County. Performances are planned at the United Way's Night at the Oscars event Friday Sept. 17 at the Granbury Resort Conference Center. For more information call 817-579-5100. Early voting has started for the following contestants:
* Police chief Mitch Galvan and his wife Sara will be dancing as John Travolta and Karen Lynn Gomey from “Saturday Night Fever.” Voting jar is at City Hall, Bridge Street.
* Mary Ward and dance partner Kyle Watson will perform the theme dance from “All That Jazz.” Voting jar is at Southwest Securities, 1100 E. Highway 377.
* Bert Johnson will be performing as the debonair Rex Harrison from “Dr. Doolittle.” Voting jar is at Granbury First United Methodist Church, 301 Loop 567.
* Granbury High School senior Alysia Murphy will sing “My Heart Will Go On,” the theme song from Titanic, made famous by Celine Dion. Voting jar is at Chicken Express, Highway 377.
* The Historic Granbury Gunslingers will perform a scene from “Cat Ballou.” Voting is at Pearl Street Station, at the corner of Pearl and Lambert streets, just west of the square.
Economic development conference next week

The Granbury-Hood County Economic Development Corporation's annual economic outlook conference will be Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the Granbury Resort Conference Center. Speakers will include state Rep. Joe Pickett, head of the Transportation Committee, and Texas A&M economist Dr. James Gaines, among others. Cost is $40 for those who pre-register; $45 on the day of the event. Barbershop harmony planned at concert

Texas Millionaires, a popular Fort Worth men’s a capella chorus, will kick off the 2010-11 Music at Acton season with a concert on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. at Acton United Methodist Church, 3433 Fall Creek Highway. The Texas Millionaires perform music based on the four-part close harmony of barbershop-style singing. They are part of the Barbershop Harmony Society, an international organization.
GISD: Four students involved in vandalism at GHS football field being punished

Four Granbury High School students were involved in vandalism at the school's football field that was reported before the Aug. 27 season opener, GISD public information officer Jeff Meador said. Punishment "is being administered," Meador said. The punishment "could include out-of-school suspension, or they could be placed in the behavior transition center," Meador added.
Texas A&M professor to speak tonight on animal diseases (Posted Mon 03:33 pm)
Dr. Buddy Faries, a professor and veterinarian from Texas A&M University, will be giving a presentation on foreign animal diseases tonight (Tuesday, Sept. 7) at Hood County Annex 1 (200 North Gordon St., at corner of Pearl Street and Deputy Larry Miller Drive), focusing on the the response to animal-related diseases in Hood County. The event, open to the public, will start at 6:30 p.m., and will include a light dinner. The presentation, of particular interest to local livestock producers, should last about an hour. Superintendent will speak in Pecan (Posted Mon 12:34 pm)
Granbury school superintendent Ron Mayfield will be the guest speaker at this week’s Breakfast Club meeting in Pecan Plantation. Ron is now in his second year in Granbury, and he will bring everyone up to date on what’s going on with the school system. He also will present his vision for the future of our schools. The meeting begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday for breakfast (or just coffee) and to hear this informative program.

VFD planning festival in Lipan (Posted Mon 07:18 am)
The Lipan Volunteer Fire Department Festival is planned for Oct.16. There will be a car show sponsored by D & D Rockin Rods. If you have a car that you would like to enter you may do so on the day of the festival starting at 10 a.m. The actual show and judging will be from noon until 4 p.m. If you are interested in booth space, contact Jane York at 254-646-3335.

Minor dock fire reported Sunday morning (Posted Sun 04:24 pm)
A minor fire on a dock in the 6500 block of Blue Water Shores, just north of Gee Road southeast of Granbury, was reported just after 7 a.m. Sunday, fire marshal Brian Fine said. A cigarette apparently ignited some leaves, Fine said. There was minor damage done to some railroad ties at the site, he added.

'Suspicious' vehicle fire strikes early Sunday morning (Posted Sun 04:17 pm)
A fire that burned a Jeep Wrangler just before 6 a.m. Sunday off of Brook Valley Drive at an apartment complex just south of the Granbury city limits made the vehicle a total loss, fire marshal Brian Fine said. A nearby pickup sustained minor damage, Fine said, noting that the blaze was "suspicious and under investigation."

Fire early Sunday morning makes Oak Trail Shores home total loss (Posted Sun 04:09 pm)
A residence on Brook Valley Street in Oak Trail Shores that was home to a man, woman and two children was a "total loss" after being struck by fire just before 5 a.m. Sunday, according to Hood County fire marshal Brian Fine. The family was out of town at the time of the fire, which is being described as "suspicious," Fine said. The house was insured, Fine said, and the Red Cross was notified to help the family relocate.

IHOP is here! You can't walk in and order pancakes, but you can pick up the ingredients to make your own at home. International House of Prayer (IHOP) is a non-denominational, nonprofit organization to assist those in need of food, clothing, furniture and other household items. Ollie Miears, executive director and pastor, and his wife had a vision to create the organization in 2008 after visiting a similar organization. “We felt God had called us to minister to those who don't know the Lord,” said Miears. IHOP is open Tuesdays-Fridays from 10 a.m. until noon. It is located at 1612 Weatherford Highway. For more information, call 817-579-6755.

Not too late to boat safe (Posted Sun 07:18 am)
The final safe boating class of the season is planned Saturday, Sept. 11. This seven-hour class is highly recommended for all boaters on our lakes, according to Coast Guard Flotilla commander Dale Nickelson. The course will be at Granbury Regional Airport, 400 Howard Clemons Road. The session runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break. The cost is $13 per certification.
